We are Organisms. Our mission is to show the world what the future of architecture looks like if human and non-human organisms collaborate as co-creators.
The Hyperboloid Banyan (video interview) is a growing pavilion in Yangshuo, Guangxi province, China. The shape is that of a hyperboloid tower. The supporting structure will rust, and the trees will merge. The result is a single organism that provides shelter to us. It was planted on barren agricultural land in mid 2025.
In collaboration with: Ficus microcarpa
The tetrahedral pavilion is made of bamboo and wires. Planted are cuttings of banyan trees, the aerial roots of which can grow down the wires. The concept is that the bamboo rots and the trees take over to create their interpretation of the structure. It was planted in July 2022 as part of the workshop Fig, Ficus, Fighouse! at Dinacon 3.

The paper Living Architecture: Making at architectural scale advocates for the establishment of dedicated outdoor environments for experimentation with architecture growing from trees. Environments need to be inclusive. And not just for people. Trees need to be given sufficient respect and freedom in order to take on their role as co-creators. At MIT’s FAB23 conference, the paper was selected as one of three featured papers.

Square roots was a happening and installation during Creating Suburb in August 2024 at the Cattle Depot Artists Village in Hong Kong.
Suburbs materialize at the periphery of a city where man-man environment transitions into wilderness. Square Roots explored the interplay between architecture and banyan trees to raise awareness for living architecture.
With an academic background in architecture and physics, Felix E. Klee explores non-static buildings that adapt to the environment. His earlier works are mechanical systems, such as the Reality Builder or the Self-Aware Network. While utilizing plant materials as part of these systems, he discovered living architecture. Trees inherently adapt to the environment. They are masters of engineering. Felix’ preferred building material is the strangler fig.
